ART DECADE: Human to Alien
Menswear RTW Fall I collection inspired by David Bowie's LOW
Theinspiration behind Art Decade is DavidBowie’s LowLowremains as influential and groundbreaking today as it was in 1976. Some sayBowie’s “Berlin Trilogy” is his most inspiring and significant work to date. The albums associated with his “Berlin Trilogy” are Bowie’s Low, “Heroes,”and Lodger, and Iggy Pop’s, The Idiot.  They were produced and recorded while Bowielived in Berlin and France.  Europeoffered an escape from the success, fame, and drugs.  And so, with his fellow recovering addict,Iggy Pop, the two tour the town up during the night, and retreated to thestudio during the day. Along the way, Brian Eno became involved too, creatingmasterworks in the process.
Thealbum cover of Low is still from the film, TheMan Who Fell to Earth.  It featuresBowie’s profile contrasting with a surreal orange sunset and an art font inyellow. We see Bowie as the alien protagonist, Thomas Jerome Newton, wearing aheavy black wool coat. This is the first outfit he wears in the film when hefalls to earth.  I am enamored with thiscoat, so I decided Low would be a perfect inspiration for a Fall menswearcollection - A collection that would capture of the transformation of agentleman to an alien, the reverse of Thomas Jerome Newton’s character in the noveland film. (He turns alien to human). Much like the dualism of Low’s fractured song side A andatmospheric instrumental side B.
Art Decade, as in the first track off Low, features refined men’s separatesand contrasting yet complimentary street separates echo Netwon’s transformationfrom human to alien.  Combined, thesepieces offer a wide variety of matching for that perfect alien-minimalist look.  Translucent shirtings, shiny suitings, flatmatte sheen.  Structured details inanomalous fabrics such as leather, wool, cotton, and synthetics.  Exaggerated collars to protect and hide theface in jackets, coats, T-shirts, and turtlenecks.  Orange and rust colors are the focal points, while dark grays, silvers, greens, yellows and blacks keep the color scheme incheck, reminiscent of a Berlin street scene.

Sometimes you get so lonely. Sometimes you get nowhere.
