- In Malawi, people with disabilities are among the poorest of the poor. Statistics indicatethat many of them probably live on less than a dollar a day. Some Malawianscall them “opunduka” and “odwala” – the crippled and the sick. While many havetried but failed to bring relief to the handicapped, one wheel chair-boundactivist, Mussa Chiwaula, has succeeded. Today, he’s the executive director ofthe NGO the Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi, an organizationfounded in 1999 to promote the rights of people with disabilities.
