SHADOWS CATCHING MACHINE
FESTIVAL DES ARCHITECTURES VIVES - 5th edition - between shadow and light
.
This object is the result of an international competition in Montpellier we've won .
Theme of the festival was "between shadow and light".

It follows 3 topics :

SIMPLICITY
Reach simplicity is awfully complicated!
It sound like a paradox but that is!
But simplicity usually means alsobeauty and economy.
Find simple solution to complex problemis our mission.
So we proposed to use a modularstructure based on a single module with some variables instead of
a special structure with a lot ofvariables.
This structure is composed by only onemodule: it's a cartonboard box 50x50x50 cm.
Each module has 5 face flat and 1 face(the white face) is shaped to design a shadow. The act of shapingthat face can be called "shadow catching"... and who shapeit is a "chasseur d' ombre".
When the sunlight hit the surfaces, those faces receive the shadows projected from the boxes 's edges.Molding and folding those faces, is possible to design differentshadows-shapes.
We have chosen to use cartonboard andpaperboard.. becouse are very simple material , light, easy to built, to un-built , cheep, easyly workable, easy to transport .
The installation is made by 110 moduleslinked each other.
Following a specific scheme, manymodules are assembled to create a rhythmic surface , made of emptyand full spaces .The installation will be not trow-awayin to the trash after the festival, it can be re-used . In fact weare use glue to connect the boxes each other using velcro. So it'seasy to un-built and to re-use..

BEAUTY
This object aspire to show 2 ideas :
the first one is the concept ofprimitive beauty ...., the mistery of a rithmic game between shadowsand lights, between volumes and empty spaces.
The other is a modern idea of beautythat always change ... following a linear function, a parametricsystem , with some variables ... as touch of colours and reflections. It's a non- rethoric beauty, not muscular, not monumental. Simple andpowerful.
The beauty it's also the pleasure ofenjoy this object, the pleasure of touching it and the pleasure tomake the experience of the "chasseur d' ombre".

SUSTAINABILITY
What we reconize as beautiful is whatrappresent better our ideal wishes to be better than we are.
That introduce the topic ofsustainability .
The interior beauty of this object isalso that it's eco-friendly.
We think that an eco-friendly approachand a high-level of counciousness and responsability about the impactof our action on the environment, should be the approach of thepresent and of the future forus and for each on of us.
Usingand promoting the use of corrugated cartonboard and paperboard wehave a lot of benefit in this terms........if you think that 74% ofcartonboard comes from recycled fiber.
Thismaterial comes from renewable sources (the trees) and at the end theproduct can be, and generally is, recycled many times.
Cartonboardand paper is one of the most environmentally friendly material.
Generallyis lighter than other construction material, and that means also lessimpact on the environment. Finally it's cheep .

Thelifecycle of cartonboard is circular the end and the start coincide ,and this continuity is well rappresent with the circular plan of theinstallation.
