Using type to demonstrate poetic imagery
  • For this project I had to take a poem from a select list and use type to create the illustrations. I was limited to 2 type families: Adobe Garamond and Univers. I was also limited to 2 colors and any tints of those 2 colors. The final result was a 7" x 7" perfect bound booklet consisting of a cover and 6 spreads.

I chose to illustrate Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Darken'd Veil" and selected black & a navy for my colors. I imagined the poem to happen in a dream-like environment where an individual is journeying through their future, even though it unnatural to gain such foresight. Even though it is forbidden, they peek behind the obscuring veil and follow a path through these sights and places. The text of the poem forms the trajectory of their journey which eventually converging in the Book of Life. The darkening of the background bleed in each spread follows the darkening of the mood throughout the poem. It was also very important to me that readers be able to clearly read the text of the entire poem from beginning to end.
