For this project in my Illustration class, we were to design our own bookplates using an animal. I chose a lion, which seems cliche at first, but in all honesty, I chose it because I love drawing lions, I've been told I have the character qualities of a lion, and one of my all time favorite songs is "Heart of a Lion" by Kid Cudi. And, if you must know, my hair has its moments of resembling a lion's mane, ahem.
Anyway, in this project, we had to incorporate an animal, "Ex Libris" and our name. I chose to hide the "Ex Libris" within the lion's mane, and keep to a graphic black and white style for overall composition. I feel it creates a clean-cut, yet bold statement, which resembles my personality, and seems fitting for a personal bookplate.
The first image is the original composition in pen and ink. The following images are fun alternatives I came up with while playing in Photoshop.
