I
have tried to use both native and exotic woods, such as native British Yew,
Mexican Rosewood, Ropala Lacewood, Pau Amerelo, and Missanda. All of these have
very different properties and appearances, yet still work together
harmoniously. They are all very fine-grained hard woods and give an amazing
finish when finely polished. When working with these, slight splitting occurred
within a few of my bowls, these ‘faults’, I came to accept and love. Nature is
the most dominant thing on this planet and even when you try to control it,
some things are still unstoppable.
I have always had an interest in
nature; both flora and fauna, but before last year, have never had the
opportunity to work with nature in its purist form. I have taken inspiration
for this project primarily from wood; its texture, grain and all of the
abnormalities that are involved in its growth. I wanted to explore these
properties, along with the natural material itself and produce functional
tableware.
