  • I’ve been looking for this,
    This square of muted reds and pinks,
    I’ve searched in all the customary places;
    I’ve turned my house, my life
    Upside down.
    I’ve rummaged through my closet,
    Throwing out all the useless pieces of a life once lived,
    Heaps of sweaters on the floor,
    The shoes that I doodled on when I daydreamed.
    I’ve run my hands between all the couch cushions,
    But found only spare change and a
    Missing plastic piece to the remote,
    Not what I was missing.
    But finally I found it there,
    Those muted reds and pinks in the shadows of your face,
    The notches and grooves that,
    When turned just imperceptibly,
    Fit perfectly,
    Turned out to be what I had thought I would never find,
    What I thought I had lost forever,
    Ripped out and torn apart;
    Turned out to be,
    When wiggled just the right way,
    The missing piece to my
    Ever-beating heart.
