I don’t even know where to begin with Isabelle. When we happened upon her house, it was evident that it had been abandoned for quite some time. The back door was standing open. With one look inside it became  abundantly clear that others had been in before us, and had basically ransacked her home. It was evident that a special person had lived very humbly in this small home for a very long time. Within two minutes of looking around, I knew the woman who lived there possessed a very strong faith in God, and for whatever reason did not have family to take care of her belongings after her death. Perhaps the thing that had the biggest impact on me was the sight of her shirt and stockings hanging in the bath room where, I am assuming, she placed them. The shoulder pads hanging out of the shirt broke my heart in the most surprising and peculiar way, and I knew then that this person deserved to be known and remembered in a way far more fitting than having what remained of her belongings strewn both inside and outside her home. Even if it was just me who remembered. But before I could remember her, I first needed to learn about who she was. In a nutshell, here are just a few of the things I’ve learned so far.

    Isabelle:
    – Never married
    – Was retired after being a lunchroom lady for several decades
    – Loved her nieces, nephews, and their children
    – Loved to sing
    – Knew God
    – Had a very wide and beautiful smile
    – Hung her pink bathrobe on the back of the bedroom door
