Eidolon is a conceptual digital painting that was created in Photoshop. My goal for this piece was to depict a haunting apparition with the appearance of a rotting pumpkin inspired by horror films of the mid-90's and science fiction. In the spirit of Halloween I wanted to push the limits of my painting abilities to create an eerie piece with an interesting story behind it. The concept of the Eidolons of the dead was explored in various literary works such as Homer's Odyssey where, after the death of the suitors, Theoclymenos notes that he sees the doorway of the court filled with them. The Greek concept of an Eidolon and its worldly effects was later used as the subject of Walt Whitman's poem by the same name in 1876.
