The brief was to make an ecological packaging for extreme conditions. Here we have an energy bar for climbers with a biodegradable packaging. The idea is to be able to have a quick snack while you are on the rock face to be able to simply drop the wrapper.
The result is a wrapper made of recycled cardboard, similar to an egg carton. Before the cardboard past is molded, clover seeds are mixed into the paste. These seeds contribute to help decompose the rapper as quickly as possible. Clover was the ideal plant since it can grow easily almost anywhere and the seed would attract animals to tear the wrapper apart. The inside of the wrapper is covered with a thin layer of bees wax to protect it from it's contents. The glue is potato based and biodegradable as well.
The individual bar is affixed to the climbers harness using the string. This very string also acts as an opener when you rip the bar from your harness. The reason for the spiral rip line is so that the empty packaging gets caught in the wind easily to avoid having too much visual pollution at the bottom of the cliff.
