                                                   Semana Santa in Ibiza

This Easter Procession called Semana Santa,is a street procession which commemorates the death of Christ, and celebrateshis Resurrection. In Ibiza, this took the form of a solemnparade of religious icons known as tronos, who were carried on the arms and backs of devout volunteers for the entire duration of the route.
In Spain, the history of such a costume withpeaked masks, capes and torches is altogether different than in America, these hoods have nothing to do with the Ku Klux Klan to witch they are so often compared. The uniformsworn during the procession are meant to recall the people from Nazareth, and are worn only by thereligious fraternities and brotherhoods responsible for carrying the statues.
The procession ends on Easter Sunday, when cathedral bells are heardringing throughout the city. The day marks the Resurrection of Christ andcelebrates his triumph over death.
