  • Streetscape design including pedestrian and roadway configuration, surface treatment, lighting, planting and furniture as part of East Village infrastructure improvements in Calgary, Alberta.
  • 8th Ave. and 5th St. intersection

  • Mid-block crossing

  • A streetscape design for the community.  The significance of Jane Jacob's concept of "eyes on the street" is not found in the sight lines or even the street, but in the eyes themselves!

  • Juxtaposing the river motif with the industrial materials of a flourishing era...

  • the tree grates

  •  ...and the bike racks

  • ...and the bollards

  • ...and the bus shelter

  • In collaboration with Stantec’s client, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, I began by developing a set of values which drove all design decisions. Developing values was a fundamental step, intended to unify a disparate community of homeless, seniors, and condo owners.

To address the Human Comfort Value, raised crossings, curb extensions, textured paving, bollards, and tactile strips give priority to the pedestrian.

To address the Community Value, planters provide gardening space for the many residents who don’t have any, and seating opportunities at intersections where people
    naturally meet.

To address the History Value, weathered steel and a river motif is wound through the pavement and furnishings, reflecting the importance of the river and industry.
