Towers are architectural monuments elevating the city dweller from the active urban ground plane. At the height of towers, ones experience becomes isolated from the public domain and the urban condition becomes physically and experientially cropped from one’s awareness. The proposal seeks to reroute the spatially andexperientially isolated occurrences at the towers height and tie these loose ends together to allow for space to move fluidly and continuously and thus reuniting the inhabitant and his/her experience back to the core experience. Furthermore, the proposal will provide a means to reactivate and energize the spaces that have become inactive or abandoned and thus interjecting the space with more universally accessible and sustainable functions.
The proposal is shaped within three phases of architectural, spatial, and urban intervention. These phases collectively will provide an elevated layer of modern communication that will redefine and introduce the city back into the framesof the experiencing self.
The architectural phase of the proposal will bridge the elevated points of isolation through a horizontal tower to seal the voids above the city grid. Thesevarious points of connection will allow for an architectural fabric that ispopulated with public and private functions. The lost communication of cities isnow given an opportunity to materialize; physically and architecturally expressingthe connections of people and place. Invisible communication is made perceivable and one is able to position one self within the network of communication; understanding how a city communicates to them and thus understanding how to respond to the message.
Spatially and within function, the horizontal towers will become a public platform engaging existing vertical towers and allowing for active uses to bleed into underutilized spaces and thus interjecting value back into abandoned spaces. Currently, thereare two levels of functioning planes within the existing urban condition. Thefirst level is the ground plane and because the level is mostly accessible tothe public, it acts as the public realm. The second level occurs above theground plane and is the result of our built environment that becomes more exclusive with height and thus is the private realm. Within a collective whole, the various horizontal towers will create a third plane, an elevated public plane. The third elevated level of propose public space; in conjunction withthe first level of public space will embrace the inner private functioning space. The result is that the existing isolated private space (the secondlevel) becomes incased within the public sphere and complete accessibility tothe public realm is made available. Above and below, one who resides within theprivate realm is always connected back to the social realm, the public realm.
The urban intervention is the newly define urban grid, outlined by various horizontal towers establishing the elevated fabric of communication. As thewalk-able city becomes more improbable with the introduction of vehicular transportation as well as the structural forms which must cater to the needs of drivers, the city grid becomes more and more fragmented, and one understandingof the grid becomes blurred. An elevated urban grid which occurs above groundand will work in conjunction with the preexisting urban grid at the groundlevel will re-sculpt, redefine, and effectively organize the urban environment. The proposed grid will work to densify parts of the city that have become dilapidatedby inadequate function or design. As the proposed urban grid becomes perceivable from above, one becomes able to see the collaboration of the new and the old and the positive presence of a city to become elevated by this coexistence.
