"LAST LOOK AT EDEN"
HELL & BACK / UNIVERSAL MUSIC / VICTOR RECORDS / 2009
Swedish rockers EUROPE returned to the world stage in 2009 with their 8th studio album "Last Look at Eden". My client wanted a modern interpretation on the "Eden" theme - something that was both compelling and controversial and paid hommage to the modern-retro rock stylings of the songs on the CD.
INSPIRATION
We turned to ferrofluid as our inspiration - a black ink-like fluid that reacts to electromagnetic fields.

We appended this concept to create a form that represented "genesis" - one that could be interpreted as an egg, spore, or dividing cell... a form that was overtly masculine in nature, and boasted hard rock undertones.
- The design continued to evolve and we decided to take a cross section through this form. This section revealed a soft fleshy fruit - one surrounded with defensive black thorns - representing something delicate, prized, and protected. The fruit has biblical connotations, and the final image evokes a conspicuous female energy.

For the CD booklet, the ferrofluid concept carried through with a series of compelling band portraits shot using black paint.
