    Milan, Italy 2011

The theme of the project involves the construction of a sustainable building, in which aspects of technology and design shrewdness express the union between good architecture and bio-architecture. The project area is located in a central area of Milan and it is an interstitial space between two buildings. During the visit of the site we saw the problems of the area and from there the first ideas were born. The project should take account of sustainability aspects such as natural ventilation, control of sunlight, water recycling and use of renewable materials. From these studies has resulted the four-story building, featuring a ground floor lobby of passage that connects the street, public area within the block, redesigned as a semi public park. Inside the accommodation is extremely flexible, with moveable walls that allow for variable spaces. This is made possible by the adoption of a perimeter steel structure. The study of the facades, the road and the inner one, led to the choice of different construction systems. Towards the road with a ventilated wooden brise-soleil, internal to the park lodges, coupled to the block stairs / elevator surrounded by a vertical garden. The roof is green on which are placed solar panels and a room where houses collect water of the plants. The materials have been refined so that they can be found nearby and they are as sustainable as possible, such as panels, insulation made from recycled paper. The result is a building with a completely new language and a construction system that makes it self as part of the thick curtain building in Milan.
