The brief was to choose a song or an album and create an unique packaging.
I choose Dream Theater because I think their actual logo does not suit the band. To me it screams Death Metal rather than Progressive Metal.
The concept for the logo I created was simply to elevate the band with a sophisticated logo.
The concept of the packaging itself deals with a lot. I immerged myself into the song - A Change of Seasons - which is 23 minutes long and started sketching.
The CD packaging is a geometrical shape that I came up with by just listening to the music in particular to the guitar. This shiny, reflective shape invites people to become that shape - since it reflects whoever is holding it - which is emerged in a sea of feelings - the display stand.
People will want to look for some sort of comfort which is offered once opened the object. The inside is made of black velvet which is a cozy, warm place where the booklet and CD sit. This elevates the box appearance to a higher level - luxurious - which fits the band and the stands I aimed for the project.
I believe that this song has much more to offer than what is suggested by the lyrics and for some reason the irrational artist inside of me designed this gluey shape which contrast the geometrical packaging shape.
The lyrical part of the song retracts mainly a journey of a man's life loosing the people he loves the most, therefore pain, sorrow, depression and death are constant ideas throughout the song. Since these are ugly feelings that nobody wants to deal with, the display stand makes people to go deep inside and touch those feelings in a non-literal way.
In one side we have an ugly and disgusting object that makes us alienate any kind of good thoughts and then the packaging contrasts that by offering a reflective and lush feeling that might be cold but is quite warm inside.
