As part of my month in the US South West I had several weeks in the rugged mountains and rangeland of West Texas. The invitation included instructions to bring hiking boots for rough walking. "How rough can it be," I thought. "I live in wilderness British Columbia". Much to my surprise, the terrain was rough and often covered with sharp volcanic rocks. I loved it all, including the scoured canyons, rough brush and unexpected dry mountain wildness. Some of these images are also what I call "extreme sketches", that is, done from a moving vehicle. When it was really rough I could barely write in the location name. I've also included several studio paintings inspired by these images.
