Advanced Problems in
Graphic Design, UMSL
Instructor: Jen McKnight
The purpose of this project was to design a typeface out of non-traditional materials.
We then had to take our hand-made alphabet and create a 15x20 poster, as well as
a 2nd piece entirely of our choosing. The only requirement for this piece was that it
had to incorporate our hand-made typeface in the design.
My typeface was created using broom dust, and I shaped each letter on a scanner
using a toothpick and a small paint brush. I looked at other script typefaces for
reference and for inspiration.
"Doris" is a small caps script. I wanted to create an identity for this typeface, and played
around with a 50s theme. The background is a scanned 50s ad with a texture over it.
The assignment required a type foundry logo, and so I chose Veer.
For the 2nd piece, I created a series of 3 postcards with my own illustrations depicting
50s housewives as paper dolls. On the back of each card is a modified quote from a
1955 guide on being a good housewife. It was intended to be dark and kind of cheeky.
I paired my typeface with "Helvetica" on the poster, and "Bebas" on the postcards.
