Do It Yourself Culture Infographic

  • For this project I create three infographics on the same topic. I surveyed my graphic design class, our student AIGA group, and my Facebook friends about their experiences with Do It Yourself (DIY) culture. One infographic was made entirely outside of the computer, one was created with mostly images, and the other was created with mostly type.
  • Non-computer. With this infographic I struggled with getting a high-resolution photos with all of the elements in focus. Initially I had my sewing machine in there too, but took it out due to depth issues. I sewed the pillow and the flag and added the lettering using vinyl letter stickers. I wanted to create an atmosphere in the photograph that looked like I just finsihed a project.
  • Image based. I hand drew the images and some of the type, then scanned it into the computer and played with color and layout in Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to keep the rough, hand-drawn effect of the hand drawings, because I felt like it tied in with the topic of DIY.
  • Type-based. I created this infographic with the letterpress. It actually started out "non-computer too." I set the type, and used wood block letters for the header. I originally wanted to come up with one poster that was printed perfectly, but each one had different elements that I liked better, so I scanned them in and compiled them in one file.
