In this project I had to develop a system of 5 icons, where each icon was to represent a decade. The available decades were limited to those within the 1920s-2010s range. The goal was to research an single object or topic that changed across the span of the decades yet could still form a cohesive icon system. The additional challenges presented themselves in form of the media. The images had to reduce down well in order to function as app icons but still read well at a large scale. The overarching topic and the subject of each icon also had to be clear without any verbal communication.
Initial brainstorming produced everything from cameras to music genres. The top choice soon became Disney for a multitude of reasons. Disney spans the time range quite perfectly and had productions in every decade but the 1920s. Disney's tradition of princess movies also helped neatly trim down the choices and form a sequence of decades. The princesses all have a strong visual identity which is marked by particular colors and clothing. This fact made it possible to greatly simplify their appearances while still leaving them identifiable by those familiar with Disney movies.
