Selfie (noun) - a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.
As the gap between our offline and online lives continues to close, traversing the landscape of this new world has become increasingly complex and, too often, perilous. When the time comes for us to reflect closely on the cultural markers of this new landscape, and this generation, we will note the increased use of social media, overblown sentiments on reality television shows (“this is my last chance, Simon!” – Katie, 19), and naturally, the stratospheric rise of the SELFIE.
This collection serves to highlight the beauty of errors and imperfection which can emerge from the heavily filtered and airbrushed world of high definition imagery. Through the careful invocation of flaws, surreal narratives emerge from the chaotic breakdown of facade.
