Dial M for Margins typography conference poster was created to find a niche area of typography, and develop a potential conference concept. The tag line Masters of Type Meet the Master of Suspense, combined with the title and imagery results in a conference based around the typographic style that designer, Saul Bass, pioneered through Alfred Hitchcock’s films. A secondary consideration for the conference is typography in modern suspense films, and how they compare to those of Hitchcock’s era
The driving force behind this poster is Alfred Hitchcock; his style, his generation and his films. The theatre setting and colour pallet were selected in order to immediately associate the poster with film, as well as Hitchcock’s time period. In mimicking Hitchcock’s films, all the elements of the poster were color treated to push contrast and vary saturation. In order to achieve the sense of being immersed in the poster, the information was heavily integrated into the setting. The dates, times and location are all contained within the tickets, while the names of the speakers and their dates are contained in the gold plaques on the backs of the seats.
