Designing on WordPress -1

  • moyerbooks.net

    Website Design using WordPress

  • About This Project:
I learned about WordPress in a previous paid project and wanted more practice using WordPress. This site is a personal project to gain that experience. Moyerbooks.net is still live, but it's currently not in use.

    Short version: 6 workdays + WordPress = 1 site with 5 pages

Long version: Follow me through the process (below).
  • STEP 1 - CATCHING THE VISION
My mother and I wrote a biography of my grandmother's childhood. To gain more exposure and sales, I decided to create a website especially for this biography series.

  • STEP 2 - PREPARING THE CONTENT
I decided to make this site small, elegant, and direct. I began preparing the content: copy, photos, and colors. I also bookmarked a few sites for design inspiration: alongwaygone.com, and older designs of bettercodes.org and lulu.com.
  • STEP 3 - DESIGNING THE LOOK
I created a mockup, or prototype in Photoshop exactly how I wanted the final design to look. I kept in mind how the elements would render on the web. By the time I had a mockup for each page, I pretty well knew how I would code them.
  • STEP 4 - CODING THE DESIGN
I chose the Twenty-Ten WordPress Theme for this site because it already had some elements I wanted. By customizing the CSS, HTML, and PHP in the backend of WordPress, I was able to replicate my photoshop mockup.
  • STEP 5 - GOING LIVE
I tweaked a few minor details after publishing the site live. Above is the final version of moyerbooks.net.
