A project I made from Kevin O' Callaghan 3d design reality at SVA-MFAD program. The assignment was to design a fashion piece with social/political statements.
This came from some thoughts that I had when I was working in the industry or corporation. I was playing around with the idea of irony. Trying to laugh at myself in one of the paths of my own profession: working for the industry. A path that I have been through myself and knew quite well. We often has this delusion of being a "designer" which seems so great and different than any other labors but the fact is what make us different from lets say factory labors are probably just the way we dress. From different perspective we're exactly like any other labors or even slaves. We may be chic or fashionable but slaves nonetheless. the screws and bolts of the big industry machines. Those front liners of the industry, climbing the ladder of careers slowly like the military, working so many hours without sleep, underpaid, don't have our own voice, and yet we strive to be a really good one and we still want to save the world.
So, I am devising these pieces of clothing which can be differentiate as uniforms with status like the military. With built in computer pouch/bag that can be put up as a working table, On the chest there're miscellaneus velcrow holders for attaching coffee cup or liquid meal while working in the suit or putting up notes and a detachable travel pillows for the fancy slave to sleep in while working. I made several iterations to make sure the strapped pouch/table mechanism works.
designing this slavery suit for me works to questions my own motivation as a designer and a also a challenge to share wether me and my peers dare to take on bigger role in the modern world as emancipated designers.
