The lure series is based on form, color, and composition. I
believe the most complex emotions can be evoked from the simplest of forms. I
find beauty in things that are cast off or neglected. Texture is of
primary importance in my pieces. I think the surfaces of my photographs are one
of the most important elements of the picture.
As the piece takes shape over time it becomes a richly layered deposit
of color, texture and form
A couple of years ago I was browsing
through a flea-market and noticed a vintage tackle box for sale. I bought the tackle box thinking I
would use it for art supplies. When I discovered it was full of fishing lures
and not being a fisherman I started looking at the lures as small sculptures or
pieces of eerie jewelry. There are precious little replicas of fishes and other
aquatic life, except these creatures are not so benign. Dangling from the
little bodies are treble hooks sharpened and shaped for only one reason - to capture.
The lures were photographed on an old
piece of textured paper with a 4x5” camera and then a C print was made. I
started by scratching and or painting on the surface of the prints until I was
satisfied. Then I scanned the image and completed the process in Photoshop.
