Day Job: How Musicians Pay the Rent (2007 version)

Day Job.

Day Job was a regular column in the Seattle Weekly when I offered to take it over in 2007 and treat it as a series of audio features for the online edition of the paper.

The experiment ran 11 episodes from 2007 to 2008, 9 of which ran in the paper and online.  Back then, we didn't know how to string a podcast together, so although the pieces won plenty of fans, we didn't know how to build on that momentum. Since then, I've learned a lot about podcasting and radio

Thinking back on the nearly 100 stories for public radio that I've filed since ending this project, these 11 Day Job episodes remain among my favorite pieces. And so, Day Job has risen again. The 2014 version features all new episodes, 1 to 2 a month. My dream is to expand it in season 2 to weekly episodes, featuring work from many contributors in many cities across the country - and eventually, around the world.

The new Day Job launched in March, 2014 at Northwester.org.
