Daracha Scotch Whisky

D&AD Student Awards 2012 - Packaging Design Brief
Designed in Collaboration with Matthew Henry

The Brief
Create packaging for a 21st Century Scotch whisky brand that challenges category convention and rituals and appeals to an international female consumer.

The Solution
Scotch is a drink steeped in history and tradition, so much so it could be argued to have an ancestry all of its own, let alone the many breweries that exist today. Using this rich past as a starting point for our investigations, we delved into the history of Scotland and soon struck upon a rather interesting fact – that the Ancient Celts were keen worshippers of oak, believing it to be a source of great wisdom, higher knowledge and impressive power.

By focusing upon this historic fascination with oak and linking it with the fact that whisky is matured in oak casks, the product remains firmly rooted in both traditional aspects of Scotland and those of whisky making. In turn, Daracha is able to adopt a progressive design and modern aesthetic that allows it to position itself as a contemporary 21st Century whisky without losing the appeal of the tradition surrounding Scotch.

The Name
Daracha (da-rak-ah), meaning “from the oak” is an exquisite blend of both Highland and Lowland Scotch whisky sourced from small, local distilleries. The name celebrates the flavouring effect that oak has upon the whisky but also alludes to that magical essence that was so revered by the Ancients.
