Being able to capture the design DNA of an individual designer or group was the main goal of this assignment. We had to dissect a designer, take their common esthetics and apply that to a writing pen. This required looking at certain designers and pick out what commonalities they applied to everything they created; look at their portfolio and ask “if this one design key was not incorporated in the final product, would this be one of their designs?” I stumbled onto Canadian designer Tobias Wong. Wong is known for taking classic products and bringing them new life with the use of various materials. Wong is not afraid to use various materials to tell a story with seemingly common products. This inspired me to take traditional pearls, coat them with a gold finish and let their form flow along the wrist.
