  • Department of Conservation. Interpretation.
Creative, informative words to go with the designers' beautiful illustration of a forest on the West Coast of New Zealand.
  • The West Coast of New Zealand's South Island is a natural wonderland. It is home to rare native species, lush forests and pristine rivers.

I was thrilled when the Department of Conservation asked me to research and write words for a series of interpretation signs for a magic West Coast spot called Hokitika Gorge.

My favourite of the signs is this one below. Good on the Department for accepting my creative and quirky concept for this sign, designed to share the story of the river and creatures that live there.

It was different from anything the Department had used before.  They loved it and, most importantly, it was a real hit with the many visitors to the area.

  • Working closely with the graphic designer and the Department of Conservation's own scientists, I came up with a quirky, creative way to tell people about the environment around them. This sign was such a hit, apparently someone even tried to steal it!
