DB68: 'Stuck in the Moment'

Popmorphic was an experimental technology company that were looking for innovative ways to showcase their Morphic Player. Put simply they had developed a Flash based video player that allowed users to re-edit footage from multiple streams using sliders to control tagged footage.
As such the clips below are not edited perfectly, the software does the editing, so you have to think outside the box in terms of what you do. You generate full music video’s for each angle you shoot, obviously this can be more expensive than shooting linear where you edit then add fx & animation to the 3 minute linear edit rather than to all the footage you shot! As such camera angles are minimal, to help reduce costs in these tests.

They were using the medium of music promo's to generate content to illustrate the capabilities of the software to investors. After shooting lots of live action footage they decide to include some animation having some footage already shot on a green screen.
It was a bit of a weird way of working for me, I was used to having an idea developed before getting anything filmed, but here I was handed a bunch of tapes and asked to come up with 3 potential concepts that would work for the band.
The footage lay dormant for a while as the production team worked on other projects, and may even have slipped thru the cracks had the bands keyboard player not noticed himself playing against an animated background playing on an editing station at the production suite! After showing it the band & the company owner I was asked to produce all 3 concepts! A total of 30 of 3 minute music video streams were animated to create the final result.
I loved this job, it was basically an open brief and freedom to go crazy in AFX. If only all the jobs were that free! The only thing I'd like to redo would be to focus on one of the visual concepts rather than trying to do them all, but that wasn't my choice. Maybe next time!
