Creating Meaningful Experiences Through Design

Learning Human-Centered Research Tools and Methods
  • This was a semester long project in which our Service Design class worked with the Samsung Corporation through a connection with our professor. Class members were provided with a brief from Samsung, but we were encouraged to think outside of the document given. We were split into groups of four for the semester. Our group called ourselves "The A Team."

WHY WE USED SERVICE DESIGN TOOLS AND METHODOLOGY
In this class we learned the basic theory of humancentered design methods such as personas, storytelling, mixed-method field research, and analyzing data using pattern finding. Our professor Helen Sanemastu explained this project best: “Our research enabled us to learn about our end-users and re-frame the design problem to respond to real needs. The design brief came from designers [from Samsung] focused on finding the people to meet their technology. We came to the project as designers focused on finding technology to meet the needs of the people.”

    HOW WE RESEARCHED
The "A Team" generated a persona named Pat, based on our combined personalities and interests. After storytelling and finding patterns in Pat's everyday life, we found problems and opportunities in her everyday life. From these problems and opportunities, we generated a “how might we” statement: How might we make Pat's life more exploratory? To help us find ideas to answer this question, we conducted participatory research. The "A Team" created a facebook group called "Beat the Monotony" and asked our friends to post answers or photos to daily prompts that we gave. After that phase was complete, we found patterns in the answers people gave to help inform our final concept. From all of this research we created "The Adventure Network" which can be viewed in detail on the other side of this sheet. While going through design process, The "A Team" realized our goal was to use technology, not as something to suck people in, but as a catalyst to get people out in the world to have experiences outside of their comfort zone.
