This was my very first project in a graphic design course. I was instructed to select a compound word and create a black and white logo representing it. The project served as a exercise in figure/ground, positive/negative space, and shape/form. A bulk of the project was done by hand with only the final rendition being done on the computer as a vector.
I sketched many different words but "rattlesnake" began to stick out early on in the process. The challenge was to create a logo representing the whole word but not by simply picturing a "snake" with a "rattle". The logo evolved over time, beginning primarily as an outline. Positive and negative space began to be considered and eventually the final design was reached. The final balances detail with the strength of positive black space.
