In the pastcenturies people used to see something and tried to record in their brain andlater shared with world through different medium like painting, novel, playsetc. People and their desires were never fulfilled and thus the third eye wasinvented and that was "Camera". In the early days of making filmsonly cameras were involved and was much harder to produce something that lookscloser to reality. Later on computers were invented and took almost half of theburden of making the films.
In the first half semester we started to explore the third eye"Camera" gradually. Getting to know it was not as difficult as itlooks like when having it in hands. In the other half comes the editing phasewhich was just like a piece of cake. The liberty of choosing the topic was agood choice as it gave us the space to do whatever we wanted to. Initiallyafter knowing the topics which were, "Cityscape and Landscape" and"Colour and Rhythm" I found both interesting to work with, but lateron I finalised Colour and Rhythm. Why I chose this has two main reasons behindit, the first was majority of the class was going for Cityscape and Landscapewhich showed monotonous to me and thus created lack of interest in it and theother reason was it looked more challenging than the other.
The first step was the story and the plotting. Having discussion with thetutor, doing research on Colour and Rhythm and doing experiments with colour,my mind was having numerous ideas to work on. Choosing the topic was not asdifficult as finalising the story and moving on. After finalising the story, moved towards plotting in the form of storyboard. The title of the movie was"Moving Lights" at the start which later on after the completion ofthe movie was changed to "Communicating Lights". The reason of thischange was as the movie is all about lights and basically lights arecommunicating with the viewer to narrate a story followed by the sound effects. The main background music was the soundtrack of iPad game named "ContreJour". The selection of it was because the entire plot was set to be anight scene that ends at dawn and night is always calm. So I was in the searchof some music which has the feeling of serene and one day while playing thegame the entire movie started playing in my mind which boost up my energy leveland it was then when this soundtrack was finalized as the main base backgroundmusic.
If we look the entire movie on graph it shows that it starts with a very smoothmove and somewhere at around 60 percent the graph line moves high and againcomes to a place where it was initially started. The reason of the jump wasbecause a time comes when the lights have to fall back into the time when thatplace was full of chattering kids. Showing a time lapse which was difficult todo as initially I was unable to express in the form of light, but with the helpof editing tools in Final Cut Pro I chose two video layers and overlay them toincrease the boldness of the light by using video filter named "ChromaKey". Here the time comes when background music gained speed to supportthe video so they both look same and involve the viewers. There was anothervideo filter added which was the "Glow" filter, it was added at thevery first shot and the reason of adding was just to add more twinkling lightsto a scene so it has some kind of energy rather it sounds boring.
The use of transitions in the movie was like a ease because moving from onescene to another was not seeming to be an easy task without them and from mypoint of view dissolve transitions seems to be original as others sound fake. The reason is the visual effect. The intensity to involve one into a film seemsto be broken if using transitions like origami, cube etc as their movement showboldness which seems to be unnatural.
At first it was a hard choice of what to export from Maya as there were onlylights that were communicating, so I finally decided to export the title of themovie that is "Communicating Lights" rendered with some colourfullights. Another matter was how and where to display the title. As there was anotherchallenge of limited time for the movie I.e. one minute so instead of giving itmore importance at the beginning stage I finally decided to put it on the leftcorner at the start similar to the logos of TV channels. It has a fade in andout transition so it doesn't look like a sudden appearance. The time was veryshort, didn't want to spoil rest of the movie.
So with the help of third eye and editing software I was able to createsomething which had a story like this. Starting from a night scene withtwinkling lights on the trees showing a clam place, where after sometimesstarts drizzling with some stars on the sky with a few clouds indicatingsomething that is missing and incomplete. As the time passes a time comes whenthe sound of a chattering birds filled the entire space and the night endsgiving birth to a new dawn, here the singing birds try to kill the silence andthe entire lights fall back in the past and found the incomplete piece of thepuzzle, that are the kids playing here and there, enjoying and communicatingwith the lights. Here after finding the lost piece the scene returns from whereit was fallen back and started his new journey again.
In the entire project nothing was too difficult but the only problem was inshooting the film as compared with editing because the place was too crowdedand my plot only had lights as a main subject.
