This is a collaborative project that a group of friends/talented designers and I did this spring for our Independent Study Zines and The Art of Self Publication. Our small design collective called "399" includes Ashley Hohnstein, Heather Christianson, Drew Schmidt, Maddi Wichert, and myself.
This was our first project in which we secretly assigned different topics to each other. We were not allowed to discuss our topics or projects with each other until after the time allotted. Then after sharing them, we assembled them by screen printing our name, "399", on a manila envelope to contain them. We each did a version of 399. Mine is the bottom one.
My assigned topic was combinations. For this I decided to experiment with overprinting, colored paper, orientation, and abstracted halftone images. I printed my zine on many different colored pieces of paper. The colored images printed are viewed differently depending on which color they are printed on. For example, the yellow image of the first page is viewed very differently on the yellow paper vs. the coral. The numbers shown are the color hex numbers of each of the two images per page. The hex numbers and abstracted are oriented so that the zine can be flipped around and viewed in any direction. The back is also the same as the front with the exception of being flipped.
This zine is intended to keep viewers turning, spinning, and flipping through the piece while enjoying the wonderful colored abstracted images. Read Less
