Jack Travis, FAIA ARCHITECT - +/- 2,000 sq ft - Completed 2004
In evolving the design concept and approach for this two-story project, the interests in color, texture, and pattern in materiality became apparent as a main focus in our solution. Meant to house the outreach agency for the University whose main goal is to procure jobs for those directly in and from the Harlem community, the spaces needed to give visual acuity to the cultural imagery of the multi-ethnic neighborhood.

Starting with a strong African tone, our intention was to make the culminating visual interpretations move out and away from just one literal interpretation to a melting of inferences of black, Latin and Euro sensibilities. The aesthetic influence of culture is prevalent throughout the entire facility where surfaces and materiality attempt to tell the story of the community and it’s people and the continued melding of cultures, ideas and services.

For this project, I was responsible for the selection and specification of all interior finishes, lighting fixtures, equipment, and furnishings.  I also collaborated with the team on the development of custom millwork used throughout.
