- Christian Union Events Week Handbill
An alteration in St Andrews, Scotland, 2012
- Seeing that the handbill originally distributed was rather disorderly, I reorganized the information and cleaned up the layout, with some final checks by the eye of my friend Grace Ho.An image of the original handbill will be up once I have scanned it in.
- Below is my alteration of the original handbill printed and distributed. My version was the one disseminated on Facebook.
Since the background is not a plain black but a cool black requiring multiple inks in CMYK printing, the version intended for print includes refinements meant to prevent the halo effect that sometimes plagues white-on-black designs (indeed, the halo effect did affect the printing of this handbill as originally printed); this screen version has been converted to RGB for colour accuracy.
- The dates and titles of each talk are now listed in tabular form, making it much simpler to find the information desired. Each module of information, moreover, is discretely laid out, easily grouped with what it most belongs with. The three typefaces, cacophonous in their promiscuous miscegenation, confused in their hierarchy, have now been reduced to two: Stencil for the display text and Gill Sans for the rest. Small caps are simulated by classically proportioned letters whose letterspacing is loosened to resemble that of stone inscriptions on public buildings.Resulting from these changes is a clearer, more coherent and ultimately more attractive handbill, balanced for the eyes and more satisfying for the mind.
