Explanation: In China, we say “茄子（qiezi—which means “eggplant”）” when smiling for the camera. 

“Sweet and Sour”

Explanation: I was surprised that Americans smiled when I walked by them on the street. In contrast, the Chinese generally look stern in public, even young children, and if someone smiles at you, you should be wondering what he or she wants from you. 

“Under Cover”

Explanation: Many light-skinned American women are in search of the perfect tan. In China, women avoid the sun at all costs. We think white means rich.

“Tea Time”

Explanation: In China, there are a lot of steps to prepare the tea before it is boiled. In America, most of the work happens just before drinking the tea.
