A collaboration with author, Grace M Foo.
Yen and Ling meet at a music camp during the holidays and become best friends. Ling has a hearing impairment, but Yen doesn't see her differently.
The story aims to create awareness and understanding among children about hearing loss and hearing aids, and foster greater acceptance of diversity and differences.
Character design/illustration and overall line work done was done by Kenn Lam, while the background paint effects and compositions were done by Ahmad Fauzan.
One of the things that we decided at the beginning was that since the underlying message of the book was to promote the acceptance of differences, (hearing impairment in particular), we chose to keep the skin colour of all the characters as white, so as to allow the young readers to focus on the message.
We played around with the idea of "when one of a person's five senses cease to function, the others will be enhanced". Hence, we thought of putting the readers through Ling's perspective when it came to the background. Adding vibrant dashes of paint across the spreads, creating a surrealistic play world of a child.
