Chicago Union Station
2012 - Cheeyoon Lee, Joseph Lee
Location: Union Station, Chicago

The first studio of the core studio sequence locates the idea of architecture at the intersection of various systems of information: from technical to cultural, from visual to tactile. Students consider the uses of precedent and antecedent in their work, while the main investigation examines the impact of structure and material systems on site and building form, and the capacity to use transformation as a methodological tool to guide a rigorous approach to decision making.
The studio will engage these issues through the design of new enlarged infrastructural node for high speed rail at Union Station in Chicago. Motivated by the rich structural and tectonic history of the train station, proposals will explore relationships between structural morphology, urban movement, environmental forces, and other performative criteria. Topics to be focused on this semester include structural systems, performative envelopes, program and flow analysis, and the development of spatial conditions that create compelling public experience.
