  • CHARLOTTE 2030: A SUSTAINABLE VISION FOR OUR FUTURE
  • Rachel Martin Design was hired by Sustain Charlotte, a local non-profit, to design “Charlotte 2030: A Sustainable Vision For Our Future”. The brochure was the product of more than 100 sustainability experts and stakeholders from broad disciplines using a collaborative and consensus-based process, drawn from government, nonprofits, private sectors and academia. The brochure was designed using a clean approach that encompassed feedback from these sustainability experts and a colorful key to depict its ten key aspects of urban sustainability: air, buildings and homes, economy, energy, food, parks and green space, waste, social equity, transportation, and water. Each of these is important because together they determine the quality of our lives.

The brochure was unveiled at a public launch event in the center city of Charlotte with Mayor Anthony Foxx, the County Commissioner Jennifer Roberts, numerous city officials, community leaders and citizens and was immediately adopted by the city and county to use as a framework in making decisions to build a sustainable region. Since the launch of this brochure, several other groups and initiatives have hatched, including a drive for Charlotte to become a leader in renewable energy, Mecklenburg County’s Environmental Policy Action Plan, City Council’s Environmental Committee and a master Sustainability Plan for Charlotte has been adopted as a result of it.

In addition to positive acceptance of the vision, the brochure has also won a PICA (Printing Industries of the Carolinas) Award of Excellence and was featured as a Design for Good case study on AIGA.org.
