Chapter Five is part of a larger exhibition called Tall Tales featuring modern totem poles created by the students of the SVA MFA Design program. We were asked to choose a modern story or timeline to base our 9' minimum structures on.
Chapter Five is based on Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In this chapter, Alice meets a hookah-smoking caterpillar who repeatedly asks her, "Who are you?" It is the part of the story when Alice realizes she has been in Wonderland for too long, and that she no longer remembers who she is. This chapter serves as a reminder that in a world where nothing makes sense and everyone is seemingly going mad, it is important to hold on to who you are.
The final totem pole is made of hand-painted birch plywood that had been laser etched with the text from the chapter.
Created under the direction of Kevin O'Callaghan with the help of Joe Pastor and Kaori Sakai. Read Less
