Problem: The Chapman University cafeteria needed nutrition signage that provides accessible, useful nutritional
information to students. The main objective was to increase awareness of
nutritional values in the cafeteria and to provide a way of more easily
recognizing and comparing the nutrient content of food items. Nutrients
selected for the signage were based on those researched to be most relevant to
overall health and those that students are most interested in.
Solution: Recipes and
nutrition facts were collected from the cafeteria and further analyzed using
the software, Food Processor. These foods were organized by the category and
the station at which they are served. The graphic signs were designed on the basis
of Front-of-Package labeling (FOP), providing an easy-to-use nutrition
guideline system. The
results were a color-coded system displaying key nutrients. Each color denotes a measurement—green
indicates a healthy choice, orange represents consuming in moderation, and red
signifies consuming sparingly—providing nutritional guidelines at a
glance.
