When you find yourself in a big city, you realize how everything goes fast. There is no place for kindness and humanity, only aggressiveness and indifference. We live in a world where there is little human contact, where Internet controls our lives and limits social interaction. This should make us think. I chose Shanghai as the starting point of my project consisting of analyzing the impact of megacities on people.
I wanted to create a place where there is no Internet, a quiet space where there are recreational areas for children, young and old people. In this area you can make recycled art, perform theater plays, there will also be a library, a reading room and a lunchroom. It is important that this calm zone is far away from the daily hustle and bustle.
In this skyscraper ,life takes place in a quiet way. It is a kind of holiday that the citizen can take during the weekend to relax both mentally and physically.
It’s a place where, even if just for an hour, we take the time to be with others, to have spaces to share.
This tower is for everybody: the elderly, young people, mothers and fathers, singles, for those who feel lonely, for those who want to create, for musicians, artists, and for people with disabilities. In brief, for all those who want peace and quiet.
The interconnected rings of the skyscraper can be seen as an analogy of two people who lend a hand to help each other, like a ship that docks at the pier with chains on the anchor points. Two arms that help another person, pulling and holding the other because he has had a hard time or has been dropped. We tried to incorporate this similarity to the assemblages of the skyscraper. The rings represent the people who help each other.
Is a place where people can walk and run , where there is the path of ramps, with trees and long walks, not only lifts.
We hope that this tower can fight against unhappiness, loneliness and boredom and bring down all their dramatic consequences. The Slow Tower should give a sense of satisfaction to people, to give them the feeling as if time had stopped.
Most of the facility will be run by older people, hence, there will also be dormitories and housing for those who want to stay for a longer period.
In this building there are no magnetic fields, nor Internet connection, because radiations are not good neither for vegetation nor for people.
If we observe families with children in restaurants or a group of friends out for dinner, we will realize that there are more and more people isolating themselves, playing with their phones and estranged from other’s company.
We are not denying the utility of technology, on the contrary, it has undoubted advantages, we only want to create a space where people can find themselves again as social human beings. A place where we can escape when we realize that we need human interaction and rest from the excitement of the city, when we want physical and not virtual integration.
