Cardon Copy are a group based in New York that saw an opportunity within the suburb to revitalise and design the hand written advert- from lost cat through to apartment to rent the hand written post littered each lamppost and ‘sidewalk’, each with little or not design quality or understanding. I was set the challenge of replicating this act within the UK.
This process obviously starts with sourcing the poster, and I found quite an interesting proposal from a individual called Craig; Craig had created a handwritten advert proposing a group be created which would get in fancy dress and ride the train down to Bournemouth to see his grandmother each weekend, whilst also explaining his own particular favourite costume as ‘Half Clown, Half Pirate’ – with, in my eyes very suspicious and eerie overtones.
This was replicated throughout the approach I took; creating a physical, eerie character that would sit in public spaces to raise attention of Craigs proposal. The message itself was printed onto the handkerchiefs in the Clowns pocket, which is highlighted on the initial handkerchief and would be inspected by the curious individuals- the added water-feature was added when the message told the viewer not to squeeze his nose, which would inturn spray them with water from the flower on his breast pocket.
