The Poverty Reduction Coalition is a community collaborative, initiated and supported by United Way of Calgary and Area, aimed at reducing poverty in Calgary.
This study explores poverty-related crime in Calgary and the impact on women, their families, and the
professionals involved in the judicial system. The purpose was to determine the most promising points of intervention in an effort to reduce the likelihood of incarceration, the negative economic and social impact on these women and their families, and the strain on the justice system and the professionals who work within it. Given the complexity of this issue the focus of this report has been limited to women, poverty, and two offences: theft under $5,000 and failure to pay a fine.
