In the middle of painting the bunker and “metal” door on location, the
night before the scheduled morning shoot, the generator broke down,
leaving us with no lights- and no air to the spray guns. The dew point
left primer and paint wet past sunrise, so we had to forgo the metal &
rust door treatment to stay on schedule. With no time remaining for
drying paint, I resorted to spraying down the bunker with water and
throwing dirt on relief areas using a 4” dusting brush to remove the
excesses. The dirt was essentially clay silt [sienna], which looked rusty.
Ironically, I recalled those old timers in the set painting industry who
used to spin tales of similar situations when all else failed, they had to
use the only thing on hand- milk and dirt to create aging. And people
believe this is a "glamorous" job...
