CARAVELA, a portuguese train.

CARAVELA
A portuguese train, a portuguese travel, a portuguese experience.
Images and video below show the concept designed for a portuguese competition organized by "Alstom". The brief is to try to recreate a Portuguese atmosphere inside the train, a TGV that through the whole country. Telling a story about Portugal that will help travelers learn about the country, its characteristics, its history. This project won the second prize in "Esad, art and design university of Matosinhos".
We tried to express the origins of Portugal through the charateristics of the famous boat used during the portuguese discoveries, the "Caravela". We tried to transmit the sea sensations of the navigation and putting them on a earth travel, a travel of discoveries.

“Caravela” represents a strictly link to the sea and the “Descobrimentos”, nautic explorations done by portuguese people that resulted in the portuguese expansion, giving an essencial contribution to the format of the map of the world. The interior space is organised in a “zigzag” line that relates to the “Bolina” movement, that the portuguese caravela does while navegating, proposing different combinations of space: individual (with a more private occupation), as well as in groups of two or three people. The chair, inspired by the shape of a pearler, a sea element, was designed to satisfy adaptative needs of the place to the different occupations through small rotative and/ or sliding movements of the whole chair or part of it, never forgetting confort and well-being of the user. The interior of the carriage, as well as the skeleton of the “train-boat” and the external part of the chair, is coated with a “self-healing” thermoplastic that can be reused over and over, possibly saving millions of tons of waste. The internal part, the pillow, is coated with leather, the floor with wooden rulers and the support of the baggage done with tempered glass.
