Mahakala is the wrathful and fierce aspect of the Bodhisattva of compassion.
The destroyer of deception and delusion, the bestower of the power to eliminate hindrances to spiritual progression, and the protecter of the dharma from corrupting forces. His crown of five skulls represents the transmutation of the 5 negative afflictions, or poisons, of human nature into the 5 wisdoms, or positive virtues.
1) Ignorance becomes the wisdom of reality.
2) Pride becomes the wisdom of sameness.
3) Attachment becomes the wisdom of discernment.
4) Jealousy becomes the wisdom of accomplishment.
5) Anger becomes mirror-like wisdom.
