Last year, a designer friend called on graphic designers and artists in Lebanon to come together to create a series of public interventions. I decided to do my public intervention on bribery. In Lebanon, it is common to find people bribing
others with money to makes their lives easier and to avoid paying larger amounts of money. Examples of bribery in Lebanon are:
• Escaping a fine by paying a
policeman an amount of "pocket" money less than the fine itself;
• Getting transactions, especially at public
institutions, done faster;
• Paying an amount of money to let one’s car pass
the annual automotive test, knowing that the car would essentially fail the
• Avoiding paying taxes;
• Getting one’s goods into the port.
For my intervention, I chose to stamp messages on
money bills that would eventually be circulated in the public. The message on a
bill would tell the carrier how this bill could be used to bribe someone. Each
message corresponds to the value of the bill.
