Hand Woven Rug
Locally sourced and hand woven in Nova Scotia Canada
This semester I decided to hop on Nscad's biggest loom - whom I've named Moby- and make a locally sourced, locally made, all natural RUG! Apparently we all like our rugs made in India BUT I can promise you this rug won't be traveling any further than the Valley. And that seemed like gas enough to keep anyone's feet warm at night.

The warp is made from linen and the weft is wool, half natural, half died in an acid (vinegar) die bath. The geometric pattern was created by a crossed weft technique done at three different points along the weft. Peter Collingwood was my god while learning rug techniques.

My geometric design has a certain candor that I felt very suiting to weaving and the hand crafts. The triangle, a basic shape of three sides has impressive strength. The triangle has had multiple significances symbolically throughout history, including the trinity, a unity of body, mind and spirit.

The old polaroids are beautiful shots. But you had to see the blue charcoal colour of the wool.
Close up of the triangles. Crossed wefts make me week in the knees. After 80 hours of weaving I really have a good grip on how this beautiful pattern came to life.

Shoot done in the Bay of Fundy. Literally in. Largest tides in the world. Staircase soooo very necessary.
